Here we are so close to the end of Harvest and as I say every year, “It happened so fast!” Faster every year, it seems. Just a few days ago, it was in the 90s and today, there was a definite chill in the air. Even here in sunny California, it looks like fall has fallen and the warm days are done for a while.
One of the things I love most about this area is that we have a high degree of precipitation in the winter months. When I lived in Grizzly Flats, that meant snow, snow, and more snow. Here in Kelsey, it is usually just rain. We will have a couple of times when it snows enough that it would close down the county where I grew up, so that we look out and coo and think about how pretty it is. Then in a day or two, it will melt. That is the closest I like to get to snow.
I do not love the extremes of weather, at least in the form of heat or cold. The temperate seasons are my favorites. By the end of summer, I am thrilled for fall and by the end of winter, I am thrilled for springtime.
Tomorrow, my to-do list tells me it is time to do the bi-annual clothing switch when I fold away my summer clothes and unpack my winter clothes. Late spring is when I reverse the process. This time last year, I was still grieving a good bit and switching off seasonal clothing reminded me of the clothes I lost and missed. After the fire, we were blessed with wonderful donations, but it was so weird to wear someone else’s clothes after decades of wearing the same clothing.
This year isn’t as hard and I imagine every year will get easier.
This time of year, Eric and I look to endings. We evaluate which parts of our life are working and which ones are not, then work to release the ones that are not. I think of when I grew up in rural Kentucky and seeing the plant beds burning across the countryside symbolized the end of the agricultural year.
By nature, I do not do well with change. I have learned, however, to know when it is time to leave a party. Relationships, jobs, self-labels, goals, expectations, and mindsets are easier for me to release now that I am older. Time is so much more precious and I simply do not have any of it to waste on convincing someone of my worth or hammering away trying to make a situation work just so it continues beyond its natural lifespan.
This is when the trees let go of their leaves that just weeks before drew in vital nutrients to sustain the its own life. If they can let go of something so essential to health and survival, surely I can release what no longer serves me.
