Isn’t this a lovely, concise reading? I had never seen a board like this and it came to me by interesting means. I fell in love with it immediately.
At the heart of every reading are the concepts represented here: What is our main question and the energy around it? What is our intention moving forward? What must we release? What will emerge? It is amazing how much information we can get from only four cards.
How do card readings work?
But how to card readings, whether we are talking about the Tarot, Lenormand, Oracle, or Cartomancy, work?
Of course, no one knows for sure, but the modern theory is that our brains are like sophisticated computers that constantly assess and catalog information we receive, both on a conscious and a subconscious level. Many believe this is part of our risk-assessment and threat-assessment mechanisms as evolved mammals. We must quickly and accurately predict outcomes to stay alive.
Some people are more acutely tied into this network of connections. This presents in fiction with the clever observational demonstrations of characters like Sherlock Holmes. Powers of deduction do exist and as such, are more razor sharp in some people than in others. On the other side of the spectrum, or if are talking about autism, perhaps the same side of the spectrum, are people who cannot accurately predict the outcome of their actions.
Somewhere in the middle is the human ability to assess cause and effect and to apply that information to what is happening in their lives.
On a deeper level, our spirits may have an inkling of our manifest destiny or ultimate fate and guide us, gently or otherwise, to that determined outcome.
All of this adds up to the idea that when we ask the cards for guidance, our minds and spirits already know the answer. Our problem lies in accessing that information. Symbols, archetypes, colors, and number concepts are languages that bridge the gap between the conscious and the subconscious, the Higher Self and the Conscious Self. Cards and other forms of divination use those tools to connect with the Higher Self that presumably knows our outcome.
The reader then acts as an interpreter for the information provided by the cards. Often, when I read for a client, they do not seem surprised by the revelations in the cards. I believe that is because on some level, they already knew the answer.
When the client shuffles the cards or I access the client energetically and shuffle on their behalf for a remote reading, the information flows to the cards and arranges them in such a way as to attempt to deliver the message.
That is why a reading is always best if it is about YOU. Reading about other people’s actions and what they do and do not think or will or will not do requires access to their Higher Self information. Often, a reader has not even spoken to that person or established any form of personal connection to them, making it far more difficult to create a reliable link to them. When your client is interacting with you about the reading, their energy is easily accessible.
What are the different kinds of cards?
The primary types of cards used for readings are Tarot cards, Oracle cards, Lenormand cards, and Cartomancy cards. Each has a different purpose, as well as its own strengths and weaknesses.
Tarot is a system of 78 cards that deals mostly with the energy of situations. Each of the cards has a specific meaning and the reader must learn the classic interpretations of the cards to use in conjunction with their own intuitive abilities.
Oracle cards have any number of cards depending on the deck. Usually, the card has an image of some kind and a word or phrase on it. The imagery and the text on the card triggers a psychic response in the reader that provides the answer to the question.
Lenormand cards usually have 36 cards in the deck, although recently, many decks included expanded editions with extra cards. The interpretation of those cards depends on the creator’s intention. Lenormand cards are read in pairs and each card carries a very simple and specific meaning. For instance, the card “Clouds” means “Something is concealed” and if it is paired with the “Woman” card, it means, simply, “A woman is concealing something.”
Cartomancy involves reading a standard poker deck with each card having a specific meaning, very similiar to how Lenormand cards are read.
Crossroads Readings
At Crossroads, we offer many different kinds of readings. Video readings involve a private link that only you and Katrina have that allows you to access a video of the reading. E-mailed readings are a written explanation of the reading along with photographs. E-mail is often used for smaller readings and video for more detailed readings.
Katrina has read cards since 1979 and wrote the book Tarot for Real People. She also authors the blog, “Tarot Talk” that explores the meaning of the symbolism behind the seminal Pamela Colman Smith Tarot art used in the Rider-Waite and Smith-Waite Tarot decks. These blog posts go up every Tuesday on our Instagram and our Facebook page.
